Sewing Machine Operator  - Full Time

 

Position Description Summary:            Operates or tend sewing machines to join together, reinforce, decorate, or perform related sewing operations in the manufacture of products i.e. military tactical gear and accessories as well as commercial products i.e. bags.  This position reports directly to the Line Supervisor, Gladiator, Inc.

 

Position Qualifications:            This position requires a self-starting, motivated person who possesses strong organizational skills and the ability to stay focused on repetitive projects.  This person must be able to complete all assigned tasks in a quality, competent manner.  Listed below include the knowledge, skills and/or abilities necessary to meet the minimal job requirements:

 

High school or GED preferred

Previous sewing experience

Must be goal oriented and focused

Prefer bilingual skills (English/Spanish)

 

Essential Job Functions:          The following are considered essential tasks related to this position, but are not inclusive of all tasks/requirements that may be performed when requested.

· Activates and adjusts machine controls to regulate stitching speed and length,              dimensions of gathers and tucks, and material or thread tension.

· Activates sewing machine to join, gather, hem, reinforce, or decorate materials              or fabricated articles.

· Monitors machine operation to detect problems such as defective stitching,              breaks in thread or machine malfunction.

· Positions materials through feed rollers and guides, or positions and maneuvers              under sewing machine presser foot and needle during operation.

· Mounts attachments, i.e. needles, cutting blades, or pattern plates and adjusts              machine guides according to specifications.

· Examines and measures finished articles to verify conformance to standards              using ruler or tape measure.

· Selects supplies, i.e. binding, cord, or thread, according to specifications or              color of material.

· Places spools of thread, cord, or other materials on spindles, inserts bobbin,              and threads ends through machine guides and components.

· Folds or fits together materials, such as cloth, foam, rubber, or leather to              prepare for machine sewing.

· Cuts excess material or thread from finished product using blade or scissors.

· Replaces needles as needed and notifies appropriate person for machine repair              when necessary.

· Positions and marks patterns on materials to prepare for sewing.

· Tapes or twists together thread/cord to repair breaks.

· Removes finished materials from sewing machine.

· Sews materials by hand if necessary.

· Communicates amounts processed to line supervisor via batch processing or              other means.

· Assist in other capacities as assigned.

 

Key Functions: 

· Knowledgeable of assigned machine use

· Able to troubleshoot minor repair needs of assigned machine

· Demonstrates proper utilization of all machine parts and accessories including:              bobbin replacement, presser foot and feeder guide adjustments, needle              replacement, threading of machine

· Utilizes correct supplies to meet project specifications

· References traveler and completes product within vendor specifications

· <2% rework

· Cross-trained on at least two different make machines

· Visually inspects product for completeness and accuracy prior to sending              forward

· Utilizes proper safety/protective gear

 

Physical Requirements:            The employee will be working primarily indoor in a climate controlled, smoke-free office environment.  The noise level is usually loud.  The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential job functions.  These include:

 

· Sitting up to 95% of the time and standing/walking/bending the remaining time. 

· Body movements include turning of head and torso, bending, reaching and flexing of arms, bending the wrists and hands so to grasp, finger and feel objects.

· Must have command of all five body senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste.

· Vision must be sufficient to see close forms as well as entire product being produced.

· Must hear and speak clearly and distinctly well enough to communicate needs  and able to understand direction

· There is minimal to moderate lifting in this position.

· Must have the ability to read, write and understand memorandums and other materials.
